Training on a GLP-1: a week that fits the energy you actually have

The training advice most people carry into a GLP-1 prescription was written for someone eating normally. You are not eating normally — that is the entire point of the medication — so the plan has to change shape.

Training and food only, as ever. Medication questions go to your prescriber.

What the week is for

During weight loss, muscle is kept by being used. That means resistance training — pushing, pulling and squatting against load — not steps alone. Walking is worth doing, but it does not send the keep-the-muscle signal.

The good news: the effective dose is smaller than the fitness industry implies. Two to three resistance sessions a week, covering the whole body, is enough to protect lean mass — provided you actually do them.

The shape of a week that survives

  • Session A — push and legs: a squat or leg press pattern, a chest press, a shoulder press, and something for the core. Six to eight working sets total.
  • Session B — pull and legs: a hinge (deadlift pattern or hip thrust), a row, a pulldown or assisted pull-up, and carries or core. Six to eight working sets.
  • Optional session C: repeat A or B, lighter, only on a good week.
  • Most other days: an easy walk.

Notice what is missing: hero volume. Twenty-set sessions belong to people running on full tanks.

Adjusting for the flat days

GLP-1 energy is streaky — fine one week, flat the next, especially around dose changes. The plan has to bend without breaking:

  • Never skip, shrink. Two sets per exercise instead of four still counts. The worst outcome is the zero.
  • Keep the load, drop the volume. Lifting the same weight for fewer sets protects strength better than lifting light for many.
  • Train before your biggest meal window if you can. Some people find food sits better after training; experiment.
  • Hydrate deliberately. Appetite suppression quietly suppresses drinking too, and flat sessions are often just dry ones — more on that in training around side effects.

Home counts

No gym required. A pair of adjustable dumbbells covers every pattern above; so does a decent band set plus a backpack of books for goblet squats. The signal comes from effort against resistance, not from the postcode of the equipment.

Where Motivaite fits

Tell Motivaite your kit, your days and that you are on a GLP-1, and the plan builder programmes exactly this shape — resistance first, realistic volume, every exercise with a form guide. When a flat week hits, tell The Coach and it rewrites the week instead of letting it collapse. Protein has to come along too — here is that half — and the first 30 days are free.

ENOUGH READING.

The Coach is waiting, and the first month is free. Card saved, nothing charged for 30 days, cancel any time before day 31.
