Motivaite vs Freeletics: bodyweight training, or a full coaching system
Freeletics deserves credit for getting there early. It made AI-generated bodyweight training normal, built a large European following, and unlike most of this category it offers a genuinely usable free tier.
If you train at home with no equipment and do not want to pay anything, it is a sensible place to start.
What Freeletics genuinely does better
Price, for one — a real free tier is rare in this market and it removes the main barrier to starting.
It is also strong at bodyweight and HIIT specifically, which suits people with no gym access, no kit and limited space.
Where it stops
Independent testers consistently describe its personalisation as surface-level: the plans adapt, but not deeply, and two users with quite different circumstances can end up with fairly similar work.
Nutrition is thin. Gym-based strength progression — barbell work, tracked loads, progressive overload against real numbers — is not its strength either.
And like most training apps, it has no view on your sleep, your steps, or whether you actually ate enough protein to recover from what it just programmed.
What Motivaite does differently
Motivaite covers gym, home and bodyweight equally — you tell it what equipment you have, including a custom kit list, and the plan is built to that. If all you own is a pair of dumbbells and a floor, it programmes for that honestly.
Then it adds the parts Freeletics leaves out: meal plans built from your supermarket, a weekly shopping list, food logging by text, voice or photo, sleep tracking against a target, steps, a daily 7am message and an automated weekly verdict.
Personal bests are detected the moment you set them, and the plan progresses when you outgrow it.
Be honest about the trade-off
Freeletics is free to start and Motivaite is not — there is a 30-day trial, then it is a paid subscription.
If your budget is genuinely zero, that is decisive, and there is no argument to make. Free training beats paid training you cannot afford.
Choose Freeletics if
- You want bodyweight and HIIT training at no cost
- You have no equipment and no gym
- You do not want nutrition or accountability features
Choose Motivaite if
- You want training and nutrition decided together
- You train in a gym, or with kit, and want loads progressed properly
- You want to be held to it between sessions
- You have tried free apps and stopped using them
Be honest with yourself about that last point. Most people who abandon a free fitness app do not abandon it because it was free — they abandon it because nothing noticed when they stopped.
