Harsh vs Standard: choosing your AI coach's tone (and why Harsh is the default)
Most fitness apps have one personality: relentlessly, meaninglessly positive. Miss a week and they'll still tell you you're crushing it. Motivaite thinks that's a lie, and lies don't move graphs.
Harsh mode (the default)
Short sentences. Direct address. Slips named specifically, from your real data, every time: "Two sessions skipped. The wedding is in nine weeks. Today: session one, 45 minutes, done before you talk yourself out of it." Harsh mode does not accept vague excuses, always ends by pointing back at your mission, and gives exactly one concrete next action.
What Harsh is not: cruel. There are hard rules underneath it that no tone setting can override — the Coach never mocks your body, your weight or your appearance; never pushes calories below safe floors; never sets targets below a healthy weight; and drops the edge entirely if you're clearly struggling. Hard on behaviour, never on the person. Elite coach, not bully.
Standard mode
Everything true stays true — slips still get named, the data still gets read, the mission still gets pointed at. The delivery is warmer: honest about what went wrong, encouraging about the fix. If Harsh would make you avoid opening the app, Standard is the right call, because the tone that gets ignored is the wrong tone by definition.
Switching
One dropdown in Settings, effective immediately, change it as often as you like. Plenty of members run Standard for a rough month and go back to Harsh when they're ready to be pushed.
Why Harsh is the default
Because the default app experience everywhere else is flattery, and flattery is why the app graveyard on your phone exists. We'd rather you flinch occasionally and finish the mission than feel great for three weeks and vanish.
