Does 10,000 steps actually matter? How step targets work — and how to use one
Honest history first: 10,000 steps began life as a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing campaign, not science. And yet — daily step targets work, for reasons that have nothing to do with the specific number.
What the evidence actually says
Health benefits climb steeply from sedentary (2,000–3,000 steps) up to around 7,000–8,000 a day, then keep improving more gently beyond that. For fat loss specifically, steps are the quiet workhorse: an extra 4,000–5,000 daily steps burns roughly 150–250 kcal, every day, without recovery cost or willpower drama. Over a 12-week cut that's a meaningful slice of the deficit — often bigger than the formal cardio people force themselves to hate.
Why a target beats an intention
"I'll move more" is not a number, so it can't be missed, so it never changes anything. A target — 8,000, 10,000, whatever fits your life — turns movement into a daily pass/fail you can see. That visibility is the mechanism.
How it works in Motivaite
Log your steps once a day on the dashboard — one number, ten seconds. They chart over 14 days with your target as a line across the graph: volt bars are target hits, muted bars are honest misses, gaps are days you didn't log (which the coach notices too).
Set your own target — the default is 10,000, and editing it takes one tap. Then it feeds everywhere: the 7am orders will mention three sub-target days without being asked, and the weekly check-in includes your average and hit-rate in the verdict. A step target you set and then hid from would defeat the point. This one doesn't hide.
Picking your number
Currently sedentary? Start at 7,000 and hit it daily rather than worshipping 10,000 and missing. Already active? 10,000–12,000. The best target is the one just beyond your current normal — and moved up when it stops being hard.
